Raising Mindful Kids

More than ever before we have a sacred responsibility in our homes, our school, our communities and our places of worship to nurture each child as a precious gift entrusted to us. For our world to change they need to learn about the virtues within them and how to develop them. Such things as courtesy, compassion, respectfulness, cooperation, responsibility, caring, consideration, accountability, helpfulness, enthusiasm, initiative, unity, tolerance, acceptance and more.

In today’s busy world of busy schedules, blended families, less quality family time, changing priorities and more children need positive role-modeling and mentoring more than ever.

The are many things that we can do to help raise mindful kids who care about themselves, their families, their friends, their communities, and the world. This will be a place where I will share the many different ways that we can raise mindful kids and nurture their individual gifts, talents and abilities so that they embrace who they are, fully and completely.

“Quiet Time” Mindful Exercises For Children

As a teacher, I have practiced mindfulness exercises with students for about 15 years. One of my favourites is “Quiet Time”. In today’s busy world, full of never ending busyness and stimulus, there is very little focus on, or time for stillness or quiet time. And yet, I have found that once introduced to “Quiet Time”, not only do students like it, they ask to do it again and again.

Telling them to sit back in their chairs with spine straight, meets with “yeahs”.

The breath is always what is focused on first. Deep breaths in and out….holding then releasing. I then choose any number of visualizations, guided imageries, and or affirmations to focus on…or simply allow silence and stillness.

Sometimes combining this time with journal writing or reflective writing is also very  powerful. It helps the students to integrate their own experience and insights.
